My Students

"My very own book." My students get so excited simply for the chance to hold their own book. They are more engaged, willing to participate, and truly seem to enjoy reading much more when they can hunch over their own book. They love the smell of a new book, and the feel of crisp pages! It means a lot.

Our class saying is, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." My greatest hope is that this quote be not just words, but something my students really come to internalize and believe!

My kids are excited, enthusiastic, and ENERGETIC! They live in rural North Carolina, in areas where there is not much to do, and where a sort of unspoken racial segregation is still readily visible. They attend a county middle school, and many bus over an hour to school each day. Getting my kids excited about reading is no easy task, but they really latch onto stories that they can connect to easily, especially ones dealing with any sort of social injustice. The story of "To Kill a Mockingbird" parallels many of the experiences my students are living today! How powerful to read a book that describes parts of your own life?

My Project

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a phenomenal story, and one that will be incredibly relatable for my students. It will light a figurative "fire". My students are passionate, and they care deeply about matters of social injustice. However, it is not often that they get to connect with that in a book. Reading this novel will allow them the chance to do just that. My students are used to having to share books, leaning uncomfortably across aisles and battling about who turns pages. If they are lucky enough to get their own copy of a text, it is torn and tattered, cuss words written on most pages. The chance for them to have a brand new set of books, one that allows them to hold, hunch over, and follow along on their own is really special! I just picture them leaning back and really getting into the story. They deserve the best. Being able to hand them new books, because they are worth "BRAND NEW"...would be incredible, and hopefully make them feel really invested in such a "special story." :)

As stated previously, "To Kill a Mockingbird" has a tremendous potential, especially with the backgrounds of my students, to have a permanent impact on my kids.

The impact would be two-fold. First, the lessons of "To Kill a Mockingbird" would be learned, but it also stands to provide an opportunity for my students to really feel invested and connected to a book. We are working a lot with the reading strategy of "making connections". This book is one of the best ways for them to do that.
