Guitars for Elementary Schools

My students need 6 guitars to play in 2 elementary schools as part of a guitar club.

My Students

Teaching guitar would have many benefits in the classroom: community building (Students who play the guitar are able accompany school assemblies), historical and cultural connections, fine motor skill work, and learning a new skill/instrument.

These students are bright and talented students.

As in many schools there are increasing learning disabilities among students, however these students are truly wonderful. They attend a school in a rural city surrounded by beautiful landscapes and two small colleges. The community offers some potential for future development but remains small.

My Project

Although I have requested only six guitars, these six guitars will be of huge impact for the students. I teach 5th and 6th grade at two schools. The guitars will be split between the schools and used by students who do not own their own guitars. At one school there are already 4 guitars, and the other school currently owns 2. Students will learn to play basic chords, which they can use to accompany songs in class or in performance. Our schools are very community oriented and all students participate in group sings during assemblies. Guitars can be used to accompany some of these group sings and increase school pride and sense of worth. Students will also learn to play melodies on individual strings, creating a more complete music experience.

Donations made to this request will make a great difference in the lives of these students.

Each guitar will be shared among students every year, and because they are quality 3/4 size guitars, they will be perfect to last many years in the elementary music room. On the smaller impact, I can already envision how much confidence and enjoyment individual students would gain from having these guitars to play in schools. They would be activated in a way no other class can.
