Music to Our Ears!

My students need 23 quality music CDs from various genres to help expand their knowledge and appreciation for music.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Who are the Beatles? What's reggae? What's the name of the song by that composer that goes "duh-duh-duh-duh"? Help my students answer these burning questions through high quality listening examples!

I am in a small urban district in Texas where my elementary school just opened two years ago.

There are 530 students at my elementary school, 97% of them live below the poverty line. The population is about 75% Hispanic and about 25% African American. Many of the students are classified as English language learners, and are considered academically "at-risk". When these students are living their lives outside the classroom, they are only exposed to a narrow array of music. My students lack experiences with a variety of music including classical, multicultural and the origins of popular music.

My Project

Children are naturally drawn to music; however, many of my students have limited experiences with music. My students are encouraged to explore, understand, and appreciate all types of music, not just music they are used to hearing. Unfortunately, my school does not have a musical library that can aid in a strong development of musical appreciation and our budget cannot cover this important teaching aid. The new music will be used as an aid for multiple activities including writing/speaking about music to enhance language development, movement activities to help develop motor skills, creative drawings and musical compositions to cultivate creativity. Furthermore, exposure to different styles of music can develop a better understanding of history and culture.

As a music teacher, it is my responsibility to expose my students to a wide variety of music that they would not necessarily discover outside the classroom.

Through this exposure it is my intention to not only expand their knowledge of a wide variety of music, but to help create a sense of appreciation for different types of music as well. By doing so this will help develop a child with a well-rounded knowledge of different musical genres which can carry into their lives beyond school.
