Order In the Class

My students need a variety of living animals such as tarantulas, snails, guppies, a gecko, and their habitats, to help them learn and understand how all living things are classified.

My Students

Scientists in particular and humans by nature tend to create order out of chaos. My students need to explore the many different ways we group or classify what is around us. My Kindergarten students must learn how to sort while my Fifth Graders must fully understand ecosystems.

I am the Science Lab Instructor for our school.

I see all students from grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. We have over 700 students and they come to my lab once a week. I teach in an urban environment. While our school is fairly new, most of our students come from very urban neighborhoods. They come here eager to learn and to leave their disadvantages behind. They are so hungry for knowledge, especially through hands-on activities. They love to come to the science lab where they get to use all of their senses to learn about the world around them.

My Project

"Taxonomy (the science of classification) is often undervalued as a glorified form of filing.... Classifications are theories about the basis of natural order, not dull catalogs compiled only to avoid chaos." — Stephen Jay Gould, Wonderful Life (1989), 98. My students will get to see, first hand, every time they come to my room, how we group and order things. I plan to have a different animal on each of my 7 tables that the students will be able to observe every week; vertebrates and invertebrates. The younger students will explore the similarities and difference between the animals. The older students will learn how scientists classify different animals. Each week I will rotate the animals around the seven tables. This will allow the children to observe each of the animals and their habitats. They will have to chance to feed them, and see the role each animal plays in the food chain. It is fine to read about different kinds of animals, but far better observe first hand.

Most of my students do not get the chance to go to the zoo or even a nature museum.

I am looking for the opportunity to bring the "zoo" to them, while showing them how precious and important wildlife is to us. They will be able to see and in some cases touch creatures that they may otherwise never have the chance to observe. As an environmental educator I wish to share as much of nature with our students, while teaching them how animals fit into our order of life.
