My Students

Pencil and paper may be the foundation of education, but today's world is full of media and interactive technology. The chance to experience and work with new technology will give students the ability to compete in a global economy.

My students have a wide range of skill levels and come from a variety of backgrounds.

What they have in common is poverty and lack of exposure to the world outside of our rural area. Although the high school only reports a 53% or higher free/reduced lunch population, the elementary schools report over 67%. It’s unlikely that students suddenly see a huge increase in income at age 14. The nearest city is only a 50 minute drive, yet over have half have never been beyond the county borders, simply because the cost of gasoline is too much. This also means that there is not much money coming into the school system to purchase anything beyond the basics. Some students are English language learners; some are Native American. Some students need to improve their academic skills, some need a stable home. All deserve the educational opportunities that most take for granted.

My Project

This year I will be teaching intensive reading to students who are more than two grade levels behind their fellow classmates, as well as teaching advanced placement courses. Keeping everyone motivated and achieving on multiple levels will be a challenge. Using the Mimio to create an interactive white board, my classroom can extend beyond the textbook and walls. Students can collaborate on writing projects; create presentations and multi-media learning experiences. There is a much out there to help motivate students, help them learn and experience the outside world, but these aren't available because of the lack of technological resources in our building. Having a tool that can create an interactive presentation and combine technologies, will motivate students to learn and connect what they learn to real life. Seeing how their learning will help them in day to day life will result in greater academic achievement.

Because this tool is portable, not only can it be used in my classroom, but shared amongst all the teachers.

We currently do not have this type of technology available to teachers. Not only would students have this interactive experience in English, but also in other content areas. Additionally, it could be used for extra-curricular activities or for community meetings.
