My Students

Reading about plants and composting is good, but actually growing and composting, grows our learning in leaps and bounds.

My students are second graders who live in a small, rural area in Iowa.

We have only one class per level, and many of our students fall well below the poverty level. Even though our area would be considered rural, many of our students have very little experience with plants, soil, and gardening.

My Project

What in the world do worms have to do with plants, soil, and even our dinner at night? We would like to start a greenhouse in our classroom which will teach my students about soils, plants, and what worms have to do with the process of growing plants - including the veggies we like to eat. Students will see first hand as worms create soil from "trash." We can then use that soil to plant our seeds to grow plants to be used in our outdoor garden. Living in Iowa, the spring is often too cold to start plants very early, and our greenhouse will allow us to plant our seeds much earlier, allowing us to see our results before the end of the school year.

Having students read about plants and composting cannot compare to actually composting, seeing how important worms are in the process of creating soil, and growing plants that we can plant in our outdoor school garden.
