My Students

Geometry the word seems to send chills down the spine of many people. Our students must now pass state tests including Geometry in order to graduate. When they come to High School many are already struggling in other areas of Math.

My students come from a small rural town in Oklahoma.

Our students were known to need to take zero level Math classes in College. Math is something they thought they could never understand or see a reason to learn it. I've heard "My mom doesn't know how to do this and she does just fine" or "I'm never going to use this again so why do I need to learn it". I have been at this school for 3 years and I've worked very hard to make math fun and show them ways they use it everyday.

My Project

What if you came into your Geometry class and you teacher said "Today we aren't going to use our textbooks we are going to have a free day and just play games."? Wouldn't you be excited? This is the excitement your donation will give these students. They will be learning while playing games. I have requested items that include Domino games played with geometric solutions. These items will allow them to learn many lessons that are in the textbook while "playing games." They will learn terms, calculations, and many other items on state tests as well as the ACT. Using the origami paper and books requested they will be able to make the shapes. This will help them understand surface area and volume by touching the shapes. It will also aid in understanding angles and other math terms. There are endless learning possibilities. The origami paper is the only consumable. All the other materials will be able to be used for years to come. Allowing many students to be touched by your donation.

If the students learn to enjoy Math and loose their fear of Math then more of them may choose careers that use math.

Many student avoid their career dreams when they learn they will have to have math skills or classes to achieve their dreams. With a greater understanding of Math there are limitless possibilities ahead of them.
