This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math can be a challenge unless students are provided a hands-on way to understand the process. Our four Kindergarten and four 1st grade classes are going to start combining our behavior system with math to give our students an incentive to understand grouping and transferring in place value.

My students attend a Title 1 school in Texas.

We have just got a brand new school building, and are very excited to begin our new year. With our new building, change is in the air to make our students even more successful. Our Kindergarten and 1st grade teams have been meeting all summer to develop plans that will give our students a solid foundation for the rest of their education. We do have base ten blocks for math lessons in our room, but we all need another set to put one of our plans in action!

My Project

Our plan to use these base ten blocks goes along with our behavior chart. Our behavior system is a chart that the students move their clips up or down daily. We plan to make this behavior chart and a number line from 1-10. Every day the students will start on the number eight, and will move down the number line as they get warnings for inappropriate behavior. If they have "above and beyond" behavior, they have a chance of going to the numbers nine and ten. At the end of everyday, the teacher will "pay" the students in "ones" cubes for the number they ended up on. Then, one day a week, the students will "cash in" their ones for the appropriate numbers on tens or "rods" they need. The goal will be for the students to earn ten "rods" to get to one hundred or a "flat." A "flat" will earn the student a prize. This shows them the process of grouping and transferring in place value, which is the foundation for so many math processes. This also encourages good behavior.

This donation would be appreciated greatly.

It would be helping eight classrooms that are filled with eager learners. If students can get a full understanding on math at an early age, their success is endless!
