Helping Struggling Students Learn to Read!

My students need 25 activity books to give rich, focused experiences to them.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when you first began to read? Letter by letter... word by word... sentence by sentence... Suddenly, you began to see the world through the "beautiful eyes" of words.

My students are special and At Risk regular education students in an urban school in Chicago.

My students are 7 and 8 years of age (3rd grade) and are reading often times 2 years below grade level! Because of this, every aspect of reading not only is a terrible chore for them but their instruction has to be specifically tailored for each one! Often some students have difficulty reading a simple word like, "was." Other times, students have more trouble with comprehension in areas like inferencing, finding a main idea and describing character traits.

My Project

The resources for this grant will allow my students to have very targeted instruction for their needs. We use very detailed diagnostic analysis tests to determine strengths and weaknesses of each student. The breadth of these materials will ensure that I am able to help a student with areas of reading that they need. If a child has difficulty with phonics, this grant will provide the practice. If another child has trouble with the "main idea," this grant will help them understand the concept better. As the students grow and develop their literacy skills, this grant will provide the activities for them to move to the "next level."

YOU can help 3rd grade students not only learn to read but LOVE to read.

In 3rd grade when the seeds of adult literacy are sown. Help to make sure my little ones are going to become better readers. Give the gift of knowledge and reading to my students of today and tomorrow!
