Mini Musicians

My students need recorders and music books to learn how to read music and begin learning to play an instrument.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about your favorite song. How your fingers can't help but drum, your feet automatically tap, your eyes close and you are taken to a different place. I want to help my students to better understand and appreciate music. They hear music throughout their day but, they don't make their own.

I am a general education teacher in a fourth grade inclusion class.

This means that there is also a special education teacher that teaches the class with me. Our class of 30 fourth graders consists of 18 regular ed. and 12 special ed. students. The ratio of regular ed. to special ed. students must always be 60:40. Within both groups of students there are English language learners. Our school is a public school in New York City. There are 9 fourth grade classes in our school. The school is K-4 so, next year these students will be shuffled off to middle school as only 5th grade students.

My Project

I am requesting recorders and recorder music books for my class. I will be teaching the students how to read music and how to play the recorder. I have taught a previous class how to play the recorder. It quickly became their favorite subject. They were very excited to play and proud when they mastered a song. When my previous class went to middle school at the end of fourth grade, they got the chance to choose an art elective. All of the students that learned the recorder with me chose music. Besides helping the students' self esteem, music is another chance to teach math (reading music), hand/eye coordination, social studies (where the instruments and songs come from), and science (sound). Not to mention, music makes learning fun!

I have been teaching for 8 years.

When I started, our school had a music teacher that came into the classroom and taught the students music once a week. Now, there is no push in music program and the only students that get a chance to learn an instrument are the gifted students. Music gives the students that aren't academically successful another venue for success. This is the only chance these students will have to learn music before they go on to middle school.
