My Students

Do you have a favorite author? My students want to read and study the books of some of our favorite authors! We love the books that Robert Munsch, Leo Lionni, and Kevin Henkes have written but we just don't have enough of their books to do an in-depth study.

I am a building literacy coach in an urban community in Iowa.

Over 75% of my students come from low income homes. The teachers in my building are implementing a new model that helps to link reading and writing so that the two always go hand in hand. Our students have responded with overwhelming enthusiasm and we have seen remarkable growth in both their reading and writing skills. They are learning how to read, analyze and discuss all types of books. They are beginning to read a book "through the eyes" of an author. They notice things that an author does to create a mood, suspense, or even a notable character. However, we just don't have the necessary mentor texts that we need to move to the next level of achievement. .

My Project

These books will allow my students to really study an author and the way that he writes. The students can learn so much from investigating one author that both their reading and writing will improve. I want my students to have a deep understanding of what the author did to make us fall in love with the book. These books will allow me to immerse my students in an authors books to the point where they can recognize the author easily and even start to implement some of their techniques in writing.

Donations to this project will serve most of the students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Each grade level has the ability to see something new and exciting within these authors' books. My students don't have access to many books at home and by using the books in this project we can change how they read and write forever.
