Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Kill the Indian, and save the man.” Did you know this was the motto of Captain Richard H. Pratt, the man behind the US Government's program of Indian boarding schools? Right now, my students don't either and I need your help to change that.

I teach in a rural middle school where many of my students face significant challenges, both financially and socially.

We're in the process of converting to a program called Expeditionary Learning, helping students learn to question the world around them, make connections and draw conclusions. It is really exciting to be drawing together best practices in teaching, student inquiry and development, fueled by standards-based assessment.

My Project

Of course, to get this ball really rolling and help students learn to think about an issue from different perspectives and then form their own conclusions we need a topic they can really sink their teeth into and the materials to bring it to them. In order to facilitate this, I would love to start off the year with Code Talker, a novel by Joseph Bruchac that touches on both the Native American experience in boarding schools and the role of the Navajo Code Talkers in WWII. I'm going to be pulling in a lot of supplementary materials, primary documents and letters, but having a larger piece of literature that the students work with throughout the unit helps add a form of cohesiveness to the process. It also helps students to form a relationship with the protagonist they can flesh out, revise or add to during the course of our time together and their lives, as they encounter similar themes and scenarios later on.

I am incredibly excited about embarking on this expedition with my students, but without books and materials we're a little dead in the water.

Your support will help fuel the momentum we're building, enabling students to reach our targets and hopefully sail far beyond them. Thank you.
