My Students

If you can't read or write, what can you do? My 4th grade scholars are behind their peers in reading and writing for many reasons. But, the most important reason is not having enough instruction and practice of new material. It is also necessary for them to have organizational trays to use these materials.

My 4th grade scholars love to learn more than anything else.

Many of my scholars come from less than stable households and at a very young age(9) are given much of the responsibility as caretakers of their younger siblings. They see learning in school not as a chore, but as an opportunity to teach their siblings who they care for very much. Everyday I am surprised at how resilient these public elementary school students in Mississippi are and how hard they are willing to work if they are challenged and given the proper instruction and materials.

My Project

The writing and language activity centers will change my scholar's lives for the better because they will have the opportunity to challenge themselves to master any objective from the 3rd grade, as well as work towards mastery of the 4th grade curriculum. Our classroom goal is to have every student on grade level by the end of the year and this will be possible with the centers because the students will learn material in a more hands-on way (higher retention) and in a more joyous atmosphere. Many charter schools claim that having both rigor and joy are essential for true knowledge and retention and this is the ultimate goal for my students.

If you can't read or write, what can you do?

By giving to this project, you are giving the opportunity for a child to have a successful future. My students need these learning centers to attack language in a more hands-on and down to earth manner while still being enjoyable. My 4th graders being 1-2 years behind grade level it is the 4th quarter with 2 minutes remaining. I have met with my scholars and we have decided to pick a "Hail Mary" pass. Please help us with this play and answer our prayers.
