My Students

I hated Math (and school) growing up. Nothing was worse than spending hours and hours doing problems out of my math book! Because I hated math so much, I am always trying to find ways to make the subject more fun and exciting for my students. Luckily, Donors Choose makes this possible for me...

I teach 4th grade students at a Title I (high poverty) school in Southeast Louisiana.

This is my students' first year at a new school; they came from at least 2 different elementary schools and are now transitioning to life in middle school. Not only that, my students must take a high-stakes test in the Spring. If they do not pass this test (LEAP), they will have to repeat the 4th grade. We just started school a few weeks ago, but I have learned so much about these kids in a few short weeks. They are all very smart, curious, kind children who truly are interested in learning. I want to keep that interest going in my classroom... My kids have already told me that their favorite subjects overall are Math and Science. I am trying to find fun and exciting ways to bring these subjects to life for my kids!!

My Project

I realize that we must do some written work in math and that it does have its value. However, I would also like to incorporate more exciting and cooperative ways to practice math skills in my class. Because of this goal, I have selected many math resources that I can use everyday in my classroom. I plan on linking the cash register and play money to my behavior system: If students choose to follow school and class rules, they can get paid a "salary". Students then can use their money to purchase items out of a "store" that I will create. This will allow them to practice important math skills while working on self-control, responsibility, and respect! I have also chosen Math Activity Mats and Centers to get my kids up and moving while reinforcing basic math and social skills. The Math Quiz Show can be used as a team competition in class or to challenge another 4th grade class! Finally, the Math Wrap-Around Games are quick and easy games that get the whole class working together.

Show my kids that Math doesn't need to be boring and painful!

Let's keep that passion and excitement in education for my kids... and many more kids in the future. Please help make my classroom "Math-tastic".
