My Students

With the requested laptops, which provide visual, auditory and kinesthetic experiences, my students can increase their understanding and retention of Spanish, access and research authentic sites, communicate with others in Spanish and get instant feedback on assessments.

With our area being listed as high poverty on the national registry, my students have little means, but big hearts and desires.

Many have never ventured beyond state borders, and teaching diversity in any way is a challenge at times. Our school of 950 students is a public high school in the South where there are strong opinions against learning foreign languages. By taking my class, my students are declaring a desire to not only learn another language but also go to college. I am dedicated to providing the tools to reach that goal. Many of my students do not have computers at home, and with all of the good resources for language on the Internet, I want them to have access to what other more affluent students have. My students created vision boards at the beginning of the semester, and their dreams deserve a chance. I want them to see that their goals have merit and are attainable.

My Project

How much do you remember from the language classes you took? I am determined that my students will be able to really use the language, making it one of the more practical classes in the school! To do that, students need lots of repetition in a variety of ways: listening, reading, writing and speaking. With these computers my students will have the means to practice all four. My request for these mini laptops will allow my 114 Spanish students (and my colleague's 64 German students)daily access to web sites for class language skills, including listening practice, cultural studies, homework help, and assessments for immediate feedback. My web page has links to allow for the listening practice of our lessons, and with headsets students can work independently yet as a group. ¡Me gusta! ¡Me encanta! ¡Quiero más de todo! This is the class motto for this year: I like it! I love it! I want some more of it! Although this is a large request, your donation can make it happen!

Being a public school teacher in an impoverished area is in many ways difficult, but there are incredible rewards as well.

Resources are hard to come by, these days more than ever, and my students are appreciative when someone cares, and they will work hard as a result. One of my thrills as a teacher is seeing the "light" go on the eyes of students when they "get" it. They get excited which excites me. These computers will help them "get" it, like it, love it and want more of it.
