After School Movie Makers

My students need two video cameras so that we can start an after school movie making group for students who normally do not participate in school activities.

My Students

Do you remember those kids in high school who just did not quite fit in? This could have even been you!! These are the kids that don't participate in athletics, band, drill term or other school sponsored activities. But they will participate if they get to make their own movies.

Most of the students who will be a part of our after school movie making class are kids who arrive at home without much adult supervision as their parents (or more likely parent/guardian) are not home.

They mostly watch TV and sit around the house. These students are the ones on the edge of success or failure. They do not have the best grades in the world and normally they just barely pass. They occasionally get into trouble in school because they do not see the value in education and they lack the discipline of other students. Now these are not bad students by any means, but without supervision and motivation they may make bad decisions. I also hope to teach them how to work together. Most of the time these students are loners not really mixing with others. In the after school movie program they learn how to work as a team. What I really want to do is give these students is a focus, a reason for coming to school.

My Project

With these two cameras I can teach them the process and discipline of making movies. I have three older computers that can handle video editing. Instead of these students going home to watch movies, I hope to teach them to MAKE their own movies. There is a discipline in making movies and this is something these students lack. They will not be allowed to just film things. There will be treatments, planning meetings, storyboards, and they will learn to work together. That student who sits alone at lunch and has few if any friends will now begin to become a part of a team. The loner will now talk about camera angles, editing, story ideas and he/she will be a part of a group. I really am asking for only two inexpensive cameras. They don't even have to be the top of the line or fancy. I just want to put a video camera in the hands of a student and see their faces as they learn how to use it.

When a student participates in a school activity they are more likely to be successful in the classroom, and they are less likely to become an attendance or discipline problem.

But what about those kids who are not in athletics, band or those traditional school activities? Why not get them involved too? Every high school kid loves to watch TV or movies. With these cameras I can make them a participant rather than just be part of the audience.
