Building America: History through Architecture

My Students

Why don't we still live in log cabins? My students don't know why American housing is such a mix of European and Native American cultural influences.

My students are 8th graders who are mostly from low income families in a small town in southeast Kansas.

Our school is a 7th-12th grade building. They rarely get beyond the borders of their county, unless they are watching television or using the computer. They are always excited to learn beyond the textbook. Many will not go on to higher education and will remain here.

My Project

I want my students to discover their community through studying its architecture. We will use the cameras to photograph homes and businesses and print pictures for presentations. The books will be used to help identify architectural details and study the history of building in America. They will interview local home owners, architects, and building contractors. They will learn how home construction changed with new technology, the influence of new immigrants, and environmental issues. Finally, they will give presentations to their classes and, possibly, community service groups.

I want my students to appreciate their culture.

I want them to become better acquainted with the people in our community. Your financial help will allow them to use photographic equipment beyond their cell phones to study the history of home construction and, in turn, the history of our country.
