My Students

Why is the grass green, why is the sky blue, how do birds fly, do fish breath air? The only way to find answers to these age-old questions is to read. To read books, magazines, newspapers, milk cartons, street signs, fliers on the back of bathroom doors. We need material that we refuse to put down

Hard-working (when they understand why).

Honest (to a fault). Hilarious (mostly unknowingly). Lovable (always). Deserving of more (forever). My students come from families that are new to this country -- their parents work tirelessly to give them exactly the opportunities that YOU are offering. Our school is a Title I school, which means that the majority of students live at, near, or under the poverty line. We are participating in a Collaborative Literacy Program to increase our students' achievement through staff development and program implementation in literacy -- but literacy doesn't end at Dr. Seuss and Clifford. We need to use reading materials to literally open their world -- Time for Kids will do just this.

My Project

We don't know enough about the neighborhoods surrounding us, let alone about the many countries and cultures that exist around the globe. My first graders need to know the amazing traditions, foods, and places that are out there in order to inspire them to hope and work for more. I know that the possibility of a trip to Paris, France would have me working harder; can you imagine what kind of passion and curiosity this knowledge could unleash within my six year olds?

How can we expect children to be our future when we don't create it for them?

It is our responsibility to imbue students with an eagerness that comes only with endless possibilities, with a curiosity that cannot be satiated, and with a sense of adventure that demands exploration. Kids will not and cannot want for themselves what they don't know is out there -- so let's give them the world. Let's share current events and unleash imaginations. Let's give more so we can expect more.
