My Students

As a 2nd grader,can you imagine how thrilling it would be to share what you think of a book in words and pictureS on the web? Students need a reason to write their best, and sharing what you have to say and recommending a book to others is a great way to connect to the rest of the world.

Most of my students are first generation Americans often caught between two cultures and languages.

In a public school setting they are learning both how to acculturate to the dominate culture while maintaining their own cultural identity. Many have not been as successful as their counterparts in academic testing so providing them alternative ways to show success is an important part of my teaching. Most have been told since pre-school that they are not reading at grade level and need to strengthen those skills by well meaning adults who may not totally understand how to give these students opportunities for success. These students are children of the age of technology and striving to become technology natives. Using a website to publish their book reviews and illustrations is a dynamic way that these young learners can engage successfully with the world around them. Each of these students will actually become published writers at the age of 7 or 8!

My Project

The flatbed scanner I am asking for will allow students to scan their artwork so that it can be submitted along with their written book reviews for publication on the Internet at a professional children's book website. In addition, having the availability of a scanner will allow the students to scan their work to create electronic portfolios to present to their parents as documentation of their growth in school. Using artwork to enhance the written book reviews during the course of the school year, will give these students, most of whom are classified as English as a New Language learners, the opportunity to use visual communication skills in a new way. Many of these students are labeled as the "needy" when it comes to technology so the availability of a scanner to use in classroom projects will enhance their technological proficiency as well as support their literacy development.

When we receive a scanner to use with our on-line book reviews, the students will no longer be writing just for their teacher.

They will be sharing their thoughts and ideas in both writing and artwork potentially with the entire world. They will have the motivation to do their best because they will gain the satisfaction of sharing what they did well beyond the walls of our school. Each student will have the opportunity to submit three book reviews during the year and see their work on-line.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
