Even though the witchy, power-hungry plot line of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" captivates student with enough set up from the teacher, reading the play from the enormous anthology that is our literature book sucks the fun right out of one of Shakespeare's most interesting plays!

My seniors are headed in as many various directions as they hail from.

While some of the students might be interested in Shakespeare, getting them to read it from a boring literature book with tons of annotations, footnotes, and comprehension questions to make even me dread teaching it! They are reluctant readers of "classics" as well as anything that is old. Reading isn't a popular hobby in our community or school for many of the students--especially the non-college bound.

My Project

However, Macbeth is a fantastic play with a captivating plot! Students get into the power struggles, the insanity of Lady Macbeth, and of course the prophecies and witches. The materials I am requesting are a class set of this classic play told in comic format! Just the formatting of the text makes the play look interesting and fun. Plus, it gives the students visuals for every part of every scene, which aids in comprehension and interest. For the lowest of readers, it provides a lot of visual aids to help them get into the story as well. The comic format makes it less threatening and less boring that a literature anthology.

This project will get students excited about one of Shakespeare's great plays.

The format will take a boring read and transform it into fun reading that they can actually understand. Instead of being intimidated by the boring footnotes and side notes, my seniors will be enthralled by the colors and graphics in this comic version of the classic.
