The Hero's Quest: Exploring Fantasy Through Book Clubs

My students need 4 copies each of 8 Fantasy Fiction books in order for my classes to hold student-run book clubs.

My Students

“We are going on a quest!” At the start of our fantasy fiction unit, my students and I get excited to explore mystical lands where dragons roam the skies, princes save damsels in distress, young wizards realize they are destined for greatness, and young girls fall for mysterious vampires.

I teach 8th grade literacy at a charter school located in an undeserved area of New York.

During our fiction unit, we do a genre study of Fantasy Fiction writing. My students enjoy reading the fantasy books that we have in class and get excited for the opportunity to discuss literature with their classmates in book clubs. It’s an awesome way for students to get invested in their education because they lead the conversations, set up the homework, and essentially grade themselves. They also get to experience what college English classes do on a regular basis as they branch out and analyze what the authors’ intentions are. As a final project, my students write their own fantasy fiction narrative using all that they have learned across the unit.

My Project

Unfortunately, last year, the fantasy book clubs did not run as well as we would have hoped. My school did not have enough room in the budget to purchase sets of the fantasy novels that we wanted. When I sent my students out to purchase the books, many of them did not have the money to get their books and several of them lived quite a distance from a library or bookstore. Because of this, the students were not able to experience the mind-blowing potential of student-run book clubs. My students need these books because they prepare them for the expectations set in college classrooms across the country. Reading literature critically and discussing its personal and social implications is crucial to my students’ development. They need the practice to increase their reading comprehension, to take sides on an issue and hold debates, to link and connect profound ideas across different parts of a text, and to foster a love of reading.

Many of my students think that reaching college is nothing short of a fantasy.

With your help and donations, my students can slay many of the dragons that prevent them from reaching the land of College. You can make my students’ dreams come true. Please help!!!
