Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need options. They will be reading several assigned text together as a class, but many students feel trapped by curriculum. These supplemental novels will allow them to design their own focus and curriculum.

These students attend a school designed to teach film in all its aspects, which provides a particular challenge in the English classroom: how to get students motivated by the print on the pages in front of them.

My answer: choice. I want to allow them the freedom of expression that they covet, by providing unique and interesting novels that connect to the traditional curriculum they will be studying.

My Project

Sherman Alexie has not only been named one of the best writers of the 21st century, but he also writes some of the best novels for young adults. "Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" focuses on traditional coming-of-age themes through the perspective of a Native American who decides to leave his reservation and attend an all-white school. "Flight" is an in-your-face study of violence and empathy as the main character, "Zits" literally travels back in time to become history's eye-witness to the events that have formed his present life. For more canonical and challenging literature, Louise Erdrich's novels "Tracks and Last" and "Report on the Miracles of Little No Horse", are magical narratives about the lives of reservation natives who must negotiate their beliefs, gender and spirit to the forces of modern life.

Your donations will not only enable students to become their own guides, but will provide texts that will open up a world of concerns that are unknown to these students, and yet will resonate with the universal concerns of their teenage lives.
