Steel Pans To Bring Island Music To Wisconsin

My Students

Ever want to go to an island paradise during the cold, snowy, winter? In Wisconsin, we are far removed from any tropical island yet steel pan music and other island music is in our curriculum. Would you rather play steel pan on an electronic keyboard or on an actual steel pan instrument?

Our students are curious about world music and cultures and enjoy a hands on approach to learning and creating music in our school.

I serve two schools that are housed within one building. Two music teachers team-teach the 675 kids and see them two times per week for 30-minutes each time. The kids are K-5 and come from diverse backgrounds. We have a high percentage of low-income families and also we are a 70% minority population school. One school is a traditional elementary school while the other is a bi-lingual immersion public charter school.

My Project

My students need 2 steel pans to explore island music and improvisation (on-the-spot music making) in their K-5 music class. Imagine that you are 8 years old and see these wonderful instruments after dancing to island music. With your prior knowledge of pentatonic scales (5 notes where they all sound great no matter what) and the teacher has put smiley faces on the pentatonic notes on the pan, you are invited to improvise a duet with a partner while the rest of the class is supporting you with drum beat patterns and singing. Students become empowered when they create music that sounds good and that translates to improving their entire outlook on the day wherever they may go. We are also going to incorporate Family Music Nights in the near future and would like to have the ability of sharing these instruments with not only the 675 students in the building, but also their families who attend as well.

Students and family members utilizing these instruments will be able to relate to community music making, improvisation and, of course, connect to another culture through the power of music.
