My students need a listening center and books on CD to help them with their reading skills.

My Students

Our class sizes are getting larger and our school budget is continuing to be cut. Last year my class had 18 students. As of today, my class has 23 students on the roster and we constantly pick up new students throughout the year.

I am a first grade teacher who focuses on teaching reading skills.

We have a mixed population of middle class families and families whose students receive free or reduced price meals at school. Those particular families are in low income brackets and often cannot afford to buy books for their children. Also, in today's busy society, many of the students in my class have parents who do not have the time to practice reading skills to their children. Sometimes parents do not read to their children because they do not have beginning readers at home. They are too busy to visit the public library and cannot afford to purchase books through the companies that offer grade-level books, such as Scholastic Book Clubs. The students pick up a book in the classroom but often just look at the pictures.

My Project

With a listening center students could follow along in the book while hearing the story being read to them. Hearing a good reader bring a story to life changes the experience of just looking at the pictures. Once we get students excited about books, then the desire to learn to read and read more will blossom.

The use of a listening center will help students become excited about reading and ultimately become better readers and better students. Isn't this what education is all about? Please help!
