Leaping Into Reading!

My students need 7 resource sets for the innovative TAG reading system to enhance their reading and English skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is very challenging to find materials suitable for students who do not speak English as their first language. Research has proven that LISTENING to literature helps students gain both literacy AND language!

I teach first grade in South Omaha and have 18 students this year - 11 boys and 7 girls.

Of these, all but one do not speak English as their first language. They speak Spanish at home and have the challenge of learning grade level material in a language that they do not speak at home. We attend Spring Lake Magnet Center - a magnet school for technology, Spanish and math. While the year has just begun, I can already tell that my students are sweet, smart and eager to learn to read!

My Project

If my students were provided with TAG readers, the motivation to read independently would sky rocket! These pens allow students to read books INDEPENDENTLY! They can play literacy games with the books and track their progress. The thing the really stood out to me about this product is that it has amazing titles for boys! Sometimes, materials are produced that are not "cool" enough for little boys. This series has books with comic book-like feel, such as Spiderman, Bakugan and Sponge Bob. I know these materials will encourage even my most reluctant readers.

This project will impact students who have so little.

It will provide motivating materials. Research shows that boys who do not read on grade level in elementary school have a higher chance of making poor life choices. This product will encourage them to read and to stick with it, ensuring that my job will be made easier. My goal this year is to have each of my students reading at grade level by the end of the year. Thank you for your consideration!
