My students need a digital camera to take pictures of plants and insects in the school's Outdoor Classroom in order to create original writing and photographic journals.

My Students

Children of poverty need every advantage teachers can provide to experience the world in ways they wouldn't normally get to. If we can provide technology so that they can utilize it in their learning, they will have many doors open for them that they could only imagine in their dreams.

The vast majority of the students in our school are children of poverty.

They get few toys for birthdays and Christmas and are very happy to come to school where it is clean, bright, happy and there is food and nurture. Many come needing clothes, shoes and medical assistance, which we do our best to direct them to the right resources. Many of these students struggle in school for various reasons. Most of their parents are hard working and are just trying to do what's best for their children. Many have just one parent in the household and many are being raised by grandparents or aunts and uncles. We, as teachers, try to expose them to the world outside their own neighborhood. With funding for field trips being slashed, they don't get to experience the community. However, they are eager to learn and can achieve with the right support from the adults around them. Most of them love the out-of-doors. Our school has tried to maintain an Outdoor Classroom space for that reason.

My Project

A classroom digital camera will make learning so much more challenging and exciting. They will be able to create nature journals with creative dialog. They will be able to track the development of various plants and insects with photo time-lines. Following instruction, they will have the opportunity to create photographic compositions with which to showcase their learning. They will be able to understand how digital cameras work in relation to the classroom computer and be able to create photo-journalistic compositions they can be proud of.

I would really like to be able to see my kiddos have the opportunity to experience technology in such a way to give them confidence and allow creativity.

The importance of reading and writing in second grade can be underscored and enhanced tremendously by allowing them to create original works of photojournalism using a digital camera and their own imagination. Who knows what vision for the future and doors could be opened for them?
