Student Film-Makers in the Kitchen

My students need 2 Flip video cameras to film small group activities in the kitchen and classroom.

My Students

Ever wonder why your finished product in the kitchen just doesn't quite turn out the way you thought it would? This is the feeling my students have when they cook in the lab and their product doesn't turn out correct.

In my small rural Arkansas school foods lab, students many times have to re-learn cooking skills due to their cooking lessons at home.

They learn to cook from their grandparents or other family members, and many times they use an unsafe or incorrect technique for completing the recipe. The re-learning process is sometimes difficult for students who aspire to be the next "Top Chef".

My Project

Using the Flip camera, students will film kitchen and small group activities for visual playback and self-evaluation. Once you show a student working on a project from the film, they maybe more willing to work on correcting incorrect techniques. Another classroom project will be letting students film other students that have mastered sewing techniques, child care demonstrations, financial banking skills, and other in-class presentations.

By having students film small group activities as described above, they will see themselves performing activities correctly, and incorrectly, than learning can be addressed toward the intended outcome.

Current technology like the Flip video cameras are easy for students to use and they can be downloaded to classroom projection system for whole class viewing.
