Creating LifeTIME Readers!!

My students need 26 subscriptions to Time for Kids, K-1 Edition, to read throughout the school year.

My Students

Do you remember reading your first magazine? The photographs were bold and bright, and you felt so grown-up, reading about current events! My first graders love to read books, but there is something so incredibly new and special about handing them their own magazine to enjoy!

I teach first grade in a Pre K-5 inner-city elementary school.

My first graders come from a range of communities. Some children come from working class families, while others live in a low income, high crime area. Our school provides much more than an education for our students, as many also come seeking safety, a meal, and positive attention. A portion of our children receive two free meals at school everyday and cannot afford school supplies. Our students face more than their fair share of obstacles. Most of our students begin school lacking the necessary background and experiences to prepare them for a formal education. Even before the first day of kindergarten, a gap has formed between our students and their suburban counterparts. We work hard to fill in this gap by building self-confidence, creating healthy and safe environments, and providing lessons and experiences to ensure personal success. We also work to instill a lifetime commitment to literacy and learning.

My Project

I am turning to Donors Choose to ask for Time for Kids, the monthly classroom publication. This student-centered magazine provides exceptional lessons in nonfiction reading, social studies, science, health, and current events. The publication schedule for the school year almost directly aligns with our curriculum mapping in content areas. Additional content in a separate setting will greatly improve understanding and create more of a connection with the world outside their community. Also, many of my students do not have reading material in their homes. Time for Kids will be a reading resource they can bring home to share with their families and, hopefully, ignite conversations and family interaction.

Time for Kids is a magazine that provides important information in an engaging, fascinating manner.

Please help the children in my classroom learn more about the world through the exciting articles and beautiful photographs of this publication.
