Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Boring! Boring! Boring! "Reading and writing stories is only fun for the smart people in the class," I have heard a student or two complain. Many of my students would gain a deeper understanding of what they read and write if they could illustrate it, especially through painting!

My students are from a very low-income area, and most of them speak Spanish at home.

With these two factors combined, students often have small vocabulary banks. They have a difficult time expanding these word banks due to their external environment. Parents do not speak English, or if they do they are uneducated and use fewer words in their everyday speech.

My Project

I intend to utilize the pictures students paint to create word walls that enrich the vocabulary of the children. For instance, the face templates I am requesting will be used to depict an emotion, like happiness, then I will list synonyms, antonyms and other related words to that image. Because the pictures are student created, the children should have a better retention rate for the words that are presented. The water colors I am requesting will also be used to illustrate stories that the student write themselves, thus improving the students ability to visualize written words.

I feel this is an important project because it allows my students another avenue for retention of words, rather than presenting a list and expecting them to memorize it.

This is also a strong way to include my visual and kinesthetic learners. Overall, I think the project will be one that students enjoy and remember for quite some time.
