This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know how difficult it can be for students to engage in Civics? My co-teacher and I have devised a way to engage students in Family Law by having them read this unforgettable true story.

My students have all elected to attend a new branch of a high-performing charter school in Illinois.

They are coming from under-performing urban public schools, but have all elected to challenge themselves by joining our community. Most are not reading at grade-level, however, and need intensive support with literacy.

My Project

We are teaching a high-interest civics course for incoming freshmen, and will be completing a unit on family law. While the students are on winter break, we will ask them to read "A Child Called It," and think about the role of court/law in the domestic sphere. The book will give them practice utilizing active reading strategies, using Cornell notes, and will lead to a high-level debate and discussion when they return from break.

Since many of the students are faced with domestic violence in their community, the book will also provide them with an outlet and a forum to discuss experiences.

We hope to empower them as agents of change, as the course will culminate in students devising action plans to serve their communities. They will then write grant proposals to school and community members to help them implement these plans during fourth quarter.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
