My Students

"Who would ever think that so much went on in the soul of a young girl?"~Anne Frank. Working with middle school girls is a great privilege and a great challenge. Our counseling department wants to create a format that provides a safe environment to help girls transition into confident young women.

Working with middle school girls is a great privilege and a great challenge.

Our counseling department wants to create a format that provides a safe environment to help girls transition into confident young women Our Michigan middle school is home to over 800 students between the ages of 11 and 15. Our students are fun-loving and eager to learn. Unfortunately with today's society many of them, mostly the girls, and growing up way too fast. They are desperate for guidance and eagerly seek out their favorite teacher, counselor, or other staff person to help them pave their way through the world.

My Project

The Girl Empowerment group will work with female students throughout the school year to teach and inspire them to become confident young women. Here, we will create a safe place for girls to talk, rant, sound off, and find each other. By teaching girls how to open up and reach out we can rescue them from the feelings of depression and loneliness that often haunt young girls. We will teach girls how to journal their feelings and express themselves through their natural talents for art, academics, athletics, etc. The materials requested include the book "Odd Girl Out." This book is a collection of real stories submitted by young girls across the country who have struggled with relational aggression. I'm also requesting Girlosophy journals so that students have a place to record their experiences and express their feelings. Lastly, Artolescence is a tool to inspire girls to tap into their creative side and learn new ways to express themselves through different art projects.

Research shows that students who have been the target of peer aggression have increased depression, lower GPA, increased anxiety and sadness, more anger, eating disorders and loneliness.

By incorporating the Girl Empowerment Group into our counseling curriculum we have the opportunity to teach girls positive coping skills and help them develop a beautiful sense of self-worth and self-confidence.
