My students need 15 copies of "Persepolis" and five box sets of "Persepolis" and the sequel to supplement a reading class to engage and encourage reluctant readers.

My Students

When's the last time you saw someone reading a textbook for pleasure? Yeah, that's what I thought. That's why I want to introduce graphic novels to my students. Graphic novels encourage reluctant readers, develop comprehension skills, and present complex ideas in readable text.

My campus was created for students who are at-risk of not graduating high school for a variety of reasons.

As a school of choice, students apply and interview to be accepted in this public high school program. Our school targets students who need a non-traditional environment, including credit recover, a smaller learning environment, a flexible schedule, and student-centered learning. Our campus provides a small and nurturing environment where all learners are appreciated and individual talents and abilities are appreciated. Our program focuses on our five R's: Relevance, Respect, Relationship, Responsibility, and Relationships.

My Project

Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi's wise, funny, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah's regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and the great-granddaughter of one of Iran's last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country. Every student on our campus takes a reading class, so this class set will reach more than just one class a year. English and social studies teachers will prepare a cross-curricular unit to travel around the school to engage students in reading and to teach events in the Middle East.
