My Students

“Photography to me is catching a moment which is passing, and which is true.” This quote by Jacques-Henri Lartigue portrays the very reason I believe my students would benefit from having access to a camera. What better way to capture learning in the act than to freeze time?

I teach at a Title 1 school in North Carolina.

My students come from a low socioeconomic area and many are facing high poverty levels. They come from diverse backgrounds and many are non-English speakers. My students are motivated and enjoy learning. They enjoy being challenged and they look forward to coming to school each day.

My Project

Having two digital cameras in my classroom will allow for many changes to take place. Imagine students that are learning about simple machines. They could participate in a scavenger hunt around the school to photograph the ones they find. Imagine students who are working in groups and using a camera to document the changes in a compost pile they have created. Or imagine students who are building a geometric shape using blocks...they could photograph it before tearing it down to allow for further discussion and reflection. They could also transfer their images to a computer and save it, which teaches them some of the benefits of technology. Lastly, it could potentially spark a child's interest in photography and perhaps reveal their dreams in life to them. There are limitless ways a camera could better enable my students to grasp concepts and to keep up with the changing technological world in which we live at the same time.

Students who can look at a photograph that THEY created, can reflect on that photograph and can hold a discussion about that photograph are practicing powerful learning.

Not only are they fully engaged, but they are taking ownership for their own learning. And, in a nutshell, that is what I want my students to acquire at the end of every school day.
