My Students

Do you remember the excitement of picking up newly developed photographs? You got to experience the moment all over again. And share it with others. When students have an assignment but can only see their picture through the camera viewfinder, they lose interest in the project.

These photography students are a diverse group.

While a few may have money for nice cameras and opportunities for printing those shots, most students are in the class because they are trying to find an elective they can succeed in and take pride in their work. Several students each semester have learning disabilities. For them, being able to display their work on the school hall wall for all to admire is important. Even the best academic students enjoy the creative aspect of producing high quality artwork. Some ink and paper may not be high tech, but for these students, it changes the class.

My Project

These few resources will change the dynamics of the class; it will become a hands-on photography lab with real-life applications. Being able to see bold colors on glossy paper brings the photo to life for many students; the printing transforms the lesson into art. Most students do not have the equipment or resources to print pictures on their own. Students also learn when they print a poor photograph because they can see blurriness (often due to camera shake) that was not evident to them before printing.

The ability to print pictures is similar to acing an exam in an academic class.

Each semester, students participate in a regional photography contest. I have had winners in my class who then decide to go forward in their career plans based on their photography experience. Students learn simple technology by having to sync the student computers with the scanner and the printer. They learn composition lessons that do not show up on their small viewfinders or are distorted on the computer screen.
