My Students

We will double the fun, double the comprehension, double the desire to want to learn to read by having high interest books available for students to buddy read. Students will partner with a friend and read with a buddy books they choose for themselves making reading come alive for them.

My students are SMART, they're identified gifted kids, but they are poor- economically and culturally.

They're smart, and I want them to know there's more to life than what they're living in. They're beautiful children with horizons blurred by poverty. Most of the come from a house hold where the mother is the head of the family and they're living in poverty. Books are considered a luxury item so having a book to share with a peer would be an incredible opportunity for these children. These children live in one of the worst cities in the United States; we are in the Delta and in Arkansas. They need to have opportunities to fall in love with reading so they can see through a blurry horizon and begin to plan a future for them. These students are smart enough to break out of the pattern of poverty; they're smart enough to make it if they have a little luck along the way.

My Project

I requested doubles of all the books I've ordered so my students can buddy read with a classmate. Research supports children reading with a peer/buddy. They will want to do their best to impress their buddy and they will support a buddy who might stumble over a word or not really understand the comprehension of the text. I will allow the students to buddy read in places where they feel safest and love to read. I have a few double sets of books where the kids get under their desks and read or sit in a corner with a friend. My students will learn to be more efficient readers, they will learn to respect each others' differences, they will learn about different cultures, and they will learn to empathy and the desire to help one another in the classroom and in life. I will also make arrangements for more space for buddy reading if I'm funded.

Please, please fund my project.

I know these books will make a difference in my students' lives; they will be engrossed in reading as they've never been before. I will teach them to fall in love with reading as they've never loved a book before. You, my generous donors will enhance a child's life and help provide skills to SMART kids who don't have much to look forward to at home. School is their escape, we will provide them opportunities to dream and skills to fulfill their dreams.
