Rocking with Rocks

My students need 10 Earth Science resources, including a Properties of Earth Activity Tub and Rocks & Soil Book Library.

My Students

Have you ever been bored? Well this project will help my students from being bored when learning about rocks. It will help them learn about rocks and the Earth in a fun, hands on way!

I teach at a school that has about 94% free and reduced lunch.

The kids come to us with little background knowledge, but yet they really want to learn. My students are sweet and want to do their best. They really want to please their teachers and see their progress. They are students that can't learn by just sitting in a desk and listening to a teacher lecture all day. They need hands on activities that will keep them engaged, and will give them a chance to see, touch, and experience things that they would not get to any where else. They are children who need support from not only their school, but the entire community.

My Project

I have requested three sets of rocks that will allow my students to actually touch and see the different types of rocks. We currently do not have enough sets for the entire 5th grade and it is hard to use them when another teacher is using them. Having a set in my room will help my students recognize the characteristics of each type of rock. I have also requested a CD that can be used with my Smart Board. This will be a great way to display information about rocks to the students and a great way to review with them too. I have asked for a hands on tub that will allow my students to do experiments and create examples of rocks as well as parts of the Earth. It will be great to have these hands on materials to teach my students with. I have also ordered some new books that go along with this SOL (Virginia Standards). When students can apply their reading skills, then they get to learn about rocks. This gives them a chance to do cross curriculum lessons.

Supporting this project will allow my students to learn about rocks as well as the Earth.

It will help them be successful with this SOL and be ready for the SOL test at the end of the year. Not only can I use this for my 20 students this year, but I will be able to use this for years to come. So, your support will help students learn for several years. It will give them a chance to have fun and realize that learning is such a wonderful thing. Please help me make a difference.
