Poetry: A Love / Hate Relationship

My students need a class set of Sharon Creech's "Hate That Cat" novel and audio versions of that novel and the companion book, Love That Dog, for our poetry unit.

My Students

My students are very reluctant to read poetry, yet they have loved the Sharon Creech novel Love That Dog. I would love to add the second book, Hate That Cat, but we don't have funding to purchase these books. We also need audio versions of both books.

Our school is in a rural, high-poverty area.

We do have a nice building with good technology, but funding for books has been cut completely and funds for basic materials has been reduced. Money for "extras" is hard to find. Many of my students struggle with reading, and many don't have books at home. I love to provide a print-rich classroom and share my love of reading with my students.

My Project

These books will be used to enrich my poetry unit. I currently use the book Love That Dog to kick-start our unit, and the students really enjoy the book. When my students last year learned that there was a companion book, Hate That Cat, they were interested in reading it also. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the books for the class last year. We started our school year yesterday, and I would love to be able to add Hate That Cat to the poetry unit for this year. My students created some really good-quality poetry after reading the companion book, and I am sure that they would create even more poetry with this book.

Donations to my project will add resources to a great school with great kids, caring teachers, and limited finances.

In previous years, I have found that when my students learn to produce good-quality poetry, they produce better quality writing pieces in general.
