This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever read a story that used the same words over and over again? That is the challenge my students are facing. When writing about their favorite day they use the word "cool" repeatedly. Why? For a simple reason: they haven't been exposed to any fabulous synonyms.

My students are 5th graders in the great state of Texas.

They are the role models of our school. In the interest survey at the start of the year; a majority of my students indicated that they wanted to improve their writing skills. When they come in with that desire; I want to do everything in my power to assist. We do try to work on our writing a little bit everyday. We work on the fundamental skills and learn to polish our work before we publish. Once every 7 weeks they get an extended writing lesson from our library aide. These kids deserve more.

My Project

I am asking for a class set of thesauruses. These are the small books that won't take up much room in a student's desk. The small size also makes it easier for a student to consult while writing. Using these books will reinforce so many skills in addition to writing: synonyms, antonyms, alternate meanings, and even dictionary skills.

My student's writing will improve dramatically when they have more words to provide flair.

My students will take more time with their writing and think more carefully about the best word to use. No longer will everything simply be "cool."
