My Students

Last year I was able to provide my students with a great opportunity due to a Donors Choose grant I received for the 2009 Golden Jaguar Books. I would like to give that same opportunity to my students this year by having copies of all the 2010 Golden Jaguar Books in my classroom.

Each year at my school, our librarian with the input from a variety of teachers recommends 20 of our favorite new books to read.

Teachers throughout the school encourage our students to read these books and at the end of the year, a school-wide vote is taken for the overall favorite. Last year Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment won. Since I had received 2 copies of each book through a Donors Choose grant, students in my Flex class (a class that focuses on study skills, organization and enrichment)had their own challenge with the books. We spent time reading Golden Jaguars nearly everyday in class and I kept a tally of how many books each student read. I treated the 5 students who read the most books to lunch at the end of the year. All of my students read at least 5 of the Golden Jaguars throughout the year and I had 4 students that read 15 or more! This year I have new students and a new list of books to recommend and I would like to continue this tradition I have started.

My Project

By having copies of these books in my classroom for my Flex students, I will be providing them with access to new, interesting and diverse books. The Golden Jaguars are carefully chosen each year to represent a wide variety of points of view and to expose our students to thought-provoking young adult literature. This year's selection highlights books that cover topics ranging from the Holocaust to poverty to homelessness and beyond. They include a variety of genres including Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Graphic Novels, and Autobiographies. I believe that all students in my class will find books in this list that will speak to them on a personal level and will foster a love of reading. As a science teacher with a background in reading I always make sure to speak of my own love of reading with my students. Having these books in my classroom will allow me to recommend, discuss and provide high quality books to my students.

Golden Jaguar books serve as a starting point for many conversations regarding reading that will occur in my classroom throughout the year.

Having these books will make a difference to my students because they will be able to see that someone cares enough not only to recommend books but also to obtain them, read them along with the students and discuss them. Because of this, relationships and a sense of community are established within the classroom.
