My Students

"When we change the way we treat children, we can change the world," I heard from my preacher. What truer words could be spoken? Since children are the upbringing of our future, it is important they have better insight to the information of current events in a language they can comprehend.

My students are my first year students.

We have 200 walkers in our school who cross the street from the projects to get to school. They are fortunate to attend a very nice facility for school that we built six years ago, but being a first year teacher, I feel that I am lacking in supplies for them.

My Project

I have requested the provide my students with Weekly Readers, which is a curriculum rich, kid-friendly newspaper. Each week students are able to read from a grade level appropriate magazine. Students will be able to learn about the real world, and hopefully gain understanding about how the world works. Reading and discussing these topics students will learn how to problem-solve, debate, and create opinions. Students are also given the opportunity to publish their own articles! Providing students with writing tasks and articles allows them to dig deeper into what goes on around them. Also, learning life skills such as these they will be more prepared for the world outside of school. As a teacher, this is my goal to educate students for life beyond the school building in the real world.

This project is important to me because I am dedicated to my students and helping them grow as individuals through experiential learning.

Providing students with a print rich community will increase reading comprehension and fluency. Creating a literate society is important to me, and it starts in the elementary classroom with my first year class.
