Accessorizing a Math Classroom

My students need a color laser printer to display math printouts for math projects, math assignments, and presentations for both their Geometry and AP Statistics courses.

My Students

Remember those days when you think classes are going great until you pass out the unit test and discover that you are short a test? Ugh, what to you do? Think, should I leave the class unattended to make copies across the hall, or use my laser printer to make them a copy. H'm ... don't have a printer!

I will be teaching AP Statistics and Gifted Geometry this fall.

I teach in a district that has been affected by our struggling economy. Our school houses five programs and has 75% free and reduced lunch students. We have a gifted program, a CAPA (Creative arts and performing arts)program, ROTC program, freshman foundation program, and neighborhood students. Because we house the Gifted program, we also have a small percentage of well prepared students who come from homes with very involved parents. My AP Stats classes have sophomores, juniors and seniors, while the Geometry is exclusively sophomores. Since our school has such a high percentage of low income families, many of the students come unprepared with very few resources available to help them become successful in a math class. Therefore, I feel that it is my responsibility to find the tools and accessories that will help them to be successful in high school so that they will be able to compete in college and later in the work force.

My Project

A color laser printer would be a great asset to enhance mathematics in my classroom for students who have no home access to a printer. In my math classes, I assign a project or presentation for all classes quarterly. The students must create a visual display, a handout for the class, and a typed summary explaining the concept being presented. Students in AP Stats are encouraged to use Microsoft Excel to create bar graphs, pie graphs, histographs, scatterplots, etc. for univariate data assignments. By using Excel, students are able to get more accurate data graphs which are then more easily read and interpreted. In Geometry, students can create geometric shapes with Microsoft Word that will enhance the validity of the theorems and increase the logical thinking required when gathering evidence to prove the conclusion. I will also be able to print at a moment's notice an updated grade report, a note to a parent, or a last minute adjustment for a handout. A printer would certainly help students.

Today's students are fascinated with technology both in the classroom as well as at home.

Completing math projects, assignments and presentations on a computer and having access to a printer will give them a printout that can be displayed at home, in the classroom or saved to be viewed for future reference. Students would be able to view and analyze an assignment and make adjustments before turning it in for a final grade. Student work could be placed in a portfolio to show yearly student growth.
