This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you ever wish that you were a demi-god? That all of a sudden your trouble and school might be explained by Percy Jackson in the Lightning Thief? These books not only get kids hooked on reading, mythology and history, but they show our kids that sometimes learning doesn't come easy.

Our school serves 6th to 8th grade students in Colorado.

A majority of students come from first generation Mexicano Immigrant families, and the vast majority qualify for free and reduced lunch. The school day is intensely structured with a large focus on literacy and math. Students are required to complete homework every night, and operate within a remarkable behavior system that emphasizes students to STRIVE for college.

My Project

It's rare to find five books in a series that get better every time you read, but the Percy Jackson Series gets you hooked through more than 1000 pages. Set in the modern day world where the Greek Gods live in America, Percy Jackson excites kids not only about reading, but mythology and history as well. These resources will be used in two days throughout the year. First, as pleasure reading books, which are students are required to have at all times. Second, they will be integrated into an enrichment that focuses around Greek mythology and history. Named after the Camp the main character attends - Camp Half-Blood - the enrichment will include movies, readings, and even instructional time on swordplay, gladiator fighting, and Olympic games.

To get students hooked on reading is one thing.

To be able to provide an immediate outlet into several different academic subjects is another. These books will start a culture of reading throughout our school, and will be an invaluable resource when we delve into serious discussion of Greek history and mythology in World Studies Class.
