Navigate the Number Line

My students need TI-73 calculators to be able to visualize a number line using technology and to complete projects in TI-73 Explorations book.

My Students

Do you remember when your teacher asked you what was 7 minus 12? You first learned how to do this on a number line, right? My students learn how to do this on a number line, also, but now the technology is available for them to have use a number line on a calculator to visualize the problem.

My students are from a small town in Oklahoma.

They are 8th graders who enjoy texting on their cell phones, playing video games, & being on the computer. They also come from a large group of low-income families. Having the graphing calculators in their classroom to use on projects, like the Navigating the Number Line Project, will help to motivate them and get them more interested in learning integers. It will also benefit the students when they do other projects in my class and they will be more familiar with the use of graphing calculators when they go to high school and on to college.

My Project

The Texas Instruments TI-73 Plus Teacher Kit will have 10 calculators for the students and a calculator for me to to use. Along with guidebooks, a poster and much more. I will be able to take my calculator and project the image on my calculator to the board for students to see, and they will be able to match the image on their calculator to mine. Having the 10 calculators will allow students to work in pairs or very small groups. This will help them to learn to work with each other and in some cases they will be able to work individually. The activity we will start with will be a number line activity where the TI-73 shows a number line on the screen and shows movement on the number line when you take put in 3-7, it will show a line form 0 to 3 then from 3 it will move 7 places to the left. They will also be able to learn the different functions of the calculator and be more prepared for the use of the TI-83 in high school and college.

It would be a great opportunity to use these calculators in my classroom.

Donations to this project will allow me to be able to provide students with the understanding of the use of graphing calculators along with an excellent understanding of integers on a number line and much much more
