Making Music Theory and Composing Fun!

My students need 12 portable piano keyboards to put music theory into action. The keyboards will bring their compositions to life and will make music theory more fun!

My Students

My students do not believe that music class is something that they will use in their future. I want them to experience writing and listening to their own creations of music.

My students are the kids in the school that are not interested in choir or band.

Most of them are at risk students and do not find school fun. I want to open their minds and make my class a fun place for them to come during the day. Music appreciation can be challenging and boring but if these students had piano keyboards and could hear their creations instead of just seeing notes on paper, the classroom setting could become a place they look forward to entering instead of dreading everyday. It has been proved that music student's brains are stimulated for learning in all subjects. I know that these kids can make a difference in society if we can get them interested in school.

My Project

While teaching music theory including note and rest values, treble and bass clef notes, and dynamics, the students in my classroom will bring music to life from paper using these 12 keyboards. No longer will music theory just be pencil marks on a piece of paper, but instead a sound that they have created. I want my students to learn to compose a simple melody and then I will record it to a CD as a project. As they progress, harmony may be added to this melody and also student written lyrics. The students will take ownership of this project and I hope this will encourage them to enjoy the class instead of viewing this as another project they are made to finish.

Every person in the world hears music everyday but most do not understand how music is made and recorded.

Through my class, I want these non-band and choir students to understand and appreciate what they listen to everyday. I want them to study the music of the past and also the music that they listen to in the present. We need to keep music in our schools and by the students enjoying what they are learning, the music class will survive.
