Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you learn a second language in school? Was it easy or difficult? What were the tools your teacher used in helping you acquire another language? Did you have help at home with that second language? My students lack the opportunities to grasp the second language outside of school.

My students are bilingual students.

They are enrolled in a Dual Language classroom which means they are learning Spanish and English at the same time. In the classroom, we have many native Spanish speaking students as well as many native English speaking students. They receive instruction 50 percent of the time in both languages every day. They are determined children who really cannot see the amazing obstacles that are in front of them all the time. They are acquiring Spanish and English while learning the core curriculum of schooling. We are a public, Pre-K through 4th grade school. We are declared "low income/high risk" however, walking through our building our students would not portray the label that has been placed upon them. They are respectful, intelligent, helpful and caring children. They embrace education and the innovative ways their teachers teach them.

My Project

Applying the use of Apple's Nanos to my classroom would enhance my students opportunities to continue their acquiring of two languages. When children learn two languages, they are using all aspects of their intelligence. They are stretching their brains to the limits. They also cue into their contextual self when they are not sure of what is being said. Finally, they are building self confidence to speak out loud when they are not sure they are saying the correct words. Through out the year I see my students finding difficulty in sharing what they are learning with their family, specifically in the Spanish language. I would like to create podcasts discussing the weekly classroom information. Information defined as; verbs, sight words, sayings, etc. These podcasts can be accessed through the Nanos while the children are at home to reinforce the "information" for the week. Eventually, the students will create their own podcasts and listen to their peers on the Nanos.

By giving my students the opportunity to access Apple Nanos, they will be motivated to hear and acquire information that may have been lost during the day.

Children who are learning two languages, have double the amount of information entering and leaving the brain. By using these technological tools, my students will gain a much needed extra opportunity to share with their family, peers and teachers what they are learning in the classroom.
