My Students

It's often a challenge just to get high school boys to open a book, much less read it! That's why we've created an all-boys English 9 class -- to find books that boys are interested in and have stories with moral decisions and main characters that they can relate to.

Many of my guys don't like to read, and they have received poor grades in English through much of their schooling thus far.

Often times, though, these boys will thrive in a different environment if they know the curriculum is tailored toward their interests. My school started the process last year with great success. For our second year, though, we're low of funds to purchase books that will specifically appeal to boys.

My Project

The book I'm requesting is about football, an automatic hit with many boys, but it's also about brotherhood and how far one would go to protect someone else. It's about bullying, it's about facing the truth, it's about leadership, and it's about doing what's right especially when that might not be a popular thing to do. This is a book that can not only make the boys think about their own lives, but I believe it is a book that can spark great discussion amongst the guys in the class.

Any time we can get non-reading boys involved in a good story, good things happen.

Many of these boys aren't necessarily anti-reading, but they don't have people helping them to find books that will fit their interests. As a teacher, that is one of my primary jobs, and I believe this book will motivate a large portion of my class.
