My Students

This year, I borrowed some Scrabble games from a neighboring teacher to use in my Academic Enrichment class. I thought it would be a fun learning tool for the students. I was shocked when not one student knew how to play! Really? This game I had played with my family throughout my whole childhood?

You see, the families in our district have to work many jobs to make ends meet.

There are many single parent homes, with many parents who never finished high school. Family Game Night is not something parents have the time or money for. The students were so excited that I took the time to play with them and teach them the rules.

My Project

This realization turned into weekly Scrabble games in my room. I would meet with a few kids after school and teach them how to play. They would then borrow the games during their study hall time, and teach OTHER kids to play. Soon, there were fights over who would get the Scrabble games! I saw students working together, teaching each other, using the dictionary and thesaurus, and planning their strategy to get the most points with their moves.

Scrabble games are something that we take for granted.

My students don't have board games in their homes. In a generation entertained by video games, it was a breath of fresh air to see my students learning and having fun with Scrabble. Unfortunately, I was borrowing the games from a neighboring teacher who only had a few old boards. I can assure you that these games will be well played for years and years!
