My Students

The classroom collections of novels in our classroom are older, dated novels. We need new and current literature to update our classroom library.

Our school is mainly an upper elementary building with students in grades 4 - 6 and kindergarten.

My students are eager to move on to the junior high while still clinging to the familiarity of the elementary. They enjoy reading new and interesting novels, particularly those that include characters who deal with issues similar to their own.

My Project

My students prefer to use classroom sets of novels to learn and improve their reading skills. Our classroom library has only a few novel sets with enough novels for the whole class. These sets are quite old and deteriorating quickly. If we were to add new novel sets of current titles, my students would be able to experience more of the type of literature they enjoy.

The novel "Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick, about a friendship between two very different boys with mental and physical limitations, deals with many issues facing my sixth grade students.

Many will see some part of themselves in this engaging novel. By funding this project, you will help me add to my classroom library thereby increasing the literature to be enjoyed by my students.
