My Students

Reading a textbook...how boring! I want to change from the traditional textbook teaching to incorporate literature studies. I think that it's a complete injustice to stick to a textbook and not expose children to good literature.

I teach at a small, urban elementary school in a poverty stricken community.

I teach 15 students with varied learning styles. All of my students have a desire to learn, but the majority of my students come to school with limited educational skills. Many of my students have a large amount of family responsibilities, attending to younger siblings. So when they get home from school, they do not have much time to dedicate to their studies. Also, many of my parents want to do everything they can to help their children, but are struggling themselves just to make ends meet. School is the place that these students have where the teachers, resources, and time are solely dedicated to them.

My Project

Right now in class, we are using a textbook to teach reading. Many of the stories within the textbook are dated and uninteresting to students. I feel that students' love and understanding of reading will increase if they are exposed to good, engaging literature. My students need small group sets of books with literature guides to build reading comprehension skills. These literature studies will be a great way to hook students into reading. Also, these literature units will explicitly teach reading comprehension skills which are crucial to reading success. This literature unit will be directed towards my struggling readers. The books are a bit shorter, with easier vocabulary. These books will still be fun and interesting, but these books have been specifically chosen to meet students at their learning level.

I love to introduce fantastic new literature to my students.

They deserve to be interested, entertained, and engaged with good texts. These materials will be great for explicit reading instruction.
