I Am An Illustrator

My Students

When I was in school and created my first book I will never forget how excited I was to see if from cover to cover. Now that I am a teacher with students of my own, I get to share that excitement with each of them as they create their own books.

I have a group of truly awesome first graders.

We live in a rural low income district. Our building is an early childhood center housing kindergartners and first graders only. My students are exposed to a lot of books throughout the year. While I expose the students to the books we talk about the author and illustrator. When talking about the illustrator we look at the many different ways illustrators use to illustrate their books. Then when we begin to write our books we talk about the ways they would like to illustrate their own books. Their excitement begins to grow about writing and illustrating their own books.

My Project

The digital camera and camera accessories will allow my students to produce a picture illustration if that is how they chose to illustrate their book. They would be able to use the camera and take pictures of art work, nature, family members, anything they wish to add illustration to their books. We will be able to save numerous pictures with our memory cards so that each student will be able to create a book without a wait time. The card readers will save my camera battery and make for easier picture transfer to the computer.

This project is so important because it will give my students the opportunity to become both an author and illustrator.

My students will be learning in the first grade about first and second drafts and proofreading. They will learn that an author doesn't just write a book but that it is a mult-istep process. They will be leaning on so many levels through the process. Then when they are done creating their books they will be able to take those wonderful books they created and share them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
